Minorities in British film: from victims to heroes
Martin Dowle, Director of British Council Ukraine, talked on the role of cinema in pushing the boundaries of tolerance and acceptance for minorities in British society at the Cinema for Peace and Tolerance Symposium at 12.30 on 23rd October at the Bakkara Hotel in Kyiv.
His talk ranged from the debate on decriminalising homosexuality in the 1960s through to how cinema was in the lead in ethnic and sexual minority representation from the 1980s onwards. He talked also about initiatives to enable young ethnic directors to be able to make films in contemporary Britain.
