What to expect from your course
Welcome (back) to the British Council!
Here is some important information to read before you start your first class. It will help them understand what is expected of them and reassure them that they will enjoy the course.
On your course you will:
- have fun and make friends!
- develop your language skills while doing a variety of communicative activities!
- develop core skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving; communication and collaboration; citizenship;
- creativity and imagination; digital literacy; student leadership and personal development!
- develop exam skills!
- learn how to learn!
- complete collaborative projects!
- learn to reflect on your progress!
- be supported by your teachers if you have any problems!
The expectations of the classroom are that you will:
- bring your course magazine and notebook each week (given to you by the teacher)
- bring stationery each week
- participate fully in class.
- treat your classmates and your teachers with respect.
- speak with your classmates and teachers in English.
- ask your teachers if you don't understand or don't know something in English.
- not eat or drink in class (a bottle of water is ok).
- talk to your teacher if you have a problem of any kind.
The structure of the class may go something like this:
- greet each other and your teacher and prepare yourself for class,
- check homework and/or review language learnt in a previous class through a game or activity,
- learn new language introduced in the course magazine through reading/listening texts or videos,
- practise the language through games/activities or exercises from the course magazine,
- do an exercise that develops reading/writing/speaking/listening or exam skills,
- produce new language in speaking or writing activities and during the final project of the magazine,
- reflect on your learning during the class.
To practise English at home try:
- visiting Learn English Teens.
- downloading British Council apps.
- visiting the Learning hub.
- look at your magazine with a member of your family or tell them what you learnt in class.
- Talk about the texts you read or listened to! What were they about?
- Did you learn any words? What words do you remember? What do they mean?
- Did you practise new grammar? Can you use it to tell your family something in English?
- What did you do for your final project?
