Together with the Goethe-Institut Ukraine and in partnership with CANactions we launched a programme to identify, support and implement innovative urban development projects that seek to reinvigorate post-industrial, mid-sized cities across Ukraine, drawing on British and German expertise in this area.

About Urban Action

We were looking to support architectural projects that address urban issues in post-industrial, mid-sized Ukrainian cities (pop. 50,000 - 600,000). The winners will receive up to € 15,000 each to implement their project, as well as the chance to receive mentorship support from a German and/or British urban development agency. Selected teams will also get the chance to travel to Germany and/or the UK to take part in a tailored study-tour of urban regeneration.

The winning projects

A team of international experts has selected two winners: MetaLab project the Ivano-Frankivsk and MovEast of Konstantinovka (Donetsk region).

MetaLab is part of the ambitious project that aims to revive the big factory "Promprylad" in the center of Ivano-Frankivsk. The project intends to create an experimental research laboratory, which would resolve issues relevant to art, urban planning and social dialogue.

As a part of the MovEast project in Kostyantynivka, it is planned to create a cultural public open space which would be used for films screenings, musical events and as a platform for performances and social events. The winning team wants to revitalize the space in front of the existing theatre building in the city centre.
