Ukrainian Films at the UK’s Biggest Shorts Festival

Kyiv IFF Molodist in partnership with the British Council in Ukraine will present a special programme Ukrainian Focus at the Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival in Bristol (UK) on 20-25 September 2016.

The programme consists of three sections: Myroslav Slaboshpytaskiy Retrospective, Focus on Ukrainian Female Filmmakers, and Best of Molodist. Ukrainian Focus programme aims to introduce the UK audiences to contemporary Ukrainian films and its young filmmaker talents. In particular, Encounters will screen 6 films commended at Molodist in recent years, while a trend of growing female presence in the national shorts competition at Molodist will be represented by the Focus on Ukrainian Female Filmmakers. A retrospective of shorts by the Ukrainian cinema star Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy will study the director’s evolution on his way to the sensational success of his first feature The Tribe.

The screenings will take place on 21-23 September with introductions by filmmakers Tetiana Voitovych, Maryna Vroda, Kateryna Gornostai, and Nariman Aliiev.

Ukrainian Focus Programme:

 Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy Retrospective – screening of the director’s shorts (with the support of Arthouse Traffic distribution company);

 Focus on Ukrainian Female Filmmakers – shorts by Ukraine’s notable female directors:

  • Not Today by Khrystyna Syvolap
  • Big Man by Tetyana Kabayeva
  • Trash by Tetyana Symon
  • Tenderness by Anastasiya Maksymchuk
  • Mandrake by Marysia Nikitiuk
  • Tribute by Tetyana Voytovych

 Best of Molodist – outstanding works from the national competition of the Molodist Festival; the selection includes three winners of the competition:

  • Away by Kateryna Gornostai (2015 winner of National Competition)
  • Faces by Nikon Romanchenko (2014 winner of National Competition)
  • The Road Back by Oleksandr Ratiy (2013 winner of National Competition)
  • Love You by Nariman Aliyev
  • The Shop of SongBirds by Anatoliy Lavrenishyn
  • Cross by Maryna Vroda (2011 Palme d’Or winner, Festival de Cannes)

Kyiv IFF Molodist – Ukraine’s largest film festival, held annually in the last week of October for 45 years.
