The British Council Ukraine together with the Ivan Franko National Academic Theatre and Theatre Platform NGO will soon consider applications for two master-classes: one on stage design and a second on musical scoring for performance. These workshops continue the British Council’s 2015 Theatrical Competition Programme focusing on young Ukrainian directors’ productions of contemporary British drama. Both master-classes will take place at the Ivan Franko Theatre at 1 Ivan Franko Square in Kyiv.
Dates:
16-18 September 2015 – Master Class in Stage Design
22-25 September 2015 – Master Class in Sound Design for Performance
The workshops are designed for young theatre professionals – directors, scenographers, sound engineers, and actors with at least one performance on the professional stage.
The classes offer an opportunity for the formation of collaborative “teams” in scenography – directors and artistic directors, and music scoring – directors, sound engineers, composers, and actors / performers.
Each participant will enjoy the uncommon opportunity to communicate directly with leading British theatre professionals and enhance their own professional skills. The workshops will cover such practical questions:
The “The Director – Designer Dialogue” scenography workshop will be led by stage director Jan Willem van den Bosch and stage designer Liz Cooke, covering
- how to foster effective dialogue between director and scenographer, and to find a shared vision for a performance;
- how to realise this vision without compromising their creative concept and adequately conveying this in front of an audience;
- acquiring professional experience in areas of need and improving potential for meeting objectives.
The “Composition and Sound Design” workshop on music for performance will be led by director, sound engineer and composer Paddy Cunneen, covering
- preparation of “the soundscape”;
- voice editing;
- speaker and microphone arrangement;
- instruction in microphone recording and voice and musical instrument manipulation for specific purposes;
- sound mixing and balancing for the most realistic effect and other creative concepts.
Applications will be accepted by email at theplatform@gmail.com - include either “scenography master-class” or “sound production master-class” in the subject line.

- a letter of intent of no more than two pages in length. This letter is crucial during the selection phase of the competition. Participation in the master-classes is free of charge.
All travel and accommodation expenses are the responsibility of the participants.
