The aim of the English and New Competencies for Ukrainian Reformed School Education (ENCOURSE) project is to empower English language school teachers to meet the requirements of the New Ukrainian School (NUS) reform, utilise the new upper secondary school standards, and demonstrate competencies such as mediation in English as a Foreign Language teaching.

The reform of upper secondary school education is the third and final stage of the large-scale NUS education reform, which will come into effect in 2027.

Since the launch of the NUS reform in 2017, the British Council has supported school teachers of English. Together with our partners, we trained 18,000 primary school English teachers in 2018. Between 2021 and 2024, more than 12,000 English teachers completed professional development courses for basic secondary education on the British Council OTC platform.

Our new initiative aims to address the need for professional development support for upper secondary school teachers. The professional development course, aligned with the new Ukrainian national standards, provides valuable insights and opportunities for practicing mediation skills. It was developed with the expertise of leading UK professionals in English language teaching and input from the Ukrainian context.

The course shares the same name as the project, ENCOURSE, and includes extensive opportunities for practicing, learning, and developing mediation competencies. The British Council plans to pilot the course in November 2024.
